Beekeeping Classes in Central Texas

Interested in keeping honey bees but not sure where to start?

Lockhart Honey Company offers hands-on beekeeping education designed to help new and aspiring beekeepers understand what it actually takes to successfully manage honey bee colonies in Texas.

Our classes are taught by working beekeepers who manage hundreds of colonies throughout Central Texas, so the focus is on practical, real-world beekeeping—not just what you'll find in a textbook.

Whether you're considering your first hive, already have bees and need more confidence, or simply want to learn more about honey bees, we're here to help.

Learn Beekeeping Before Buying Bees

One of the best things a new beekeeper can do is learn the fundamentals before bringing home their first colony.

Beekeeping isn't simply putting bees in a box and collecting honey. Colonies change throughout the year, and successful beekeepers need to understand what they're seeing inside the hive and how to respond.

Our goal is to give you a practical foundation so you can make better decisions once you're managing colonies of your own.

What You'll Learn

Topics may vary by class and season, but our beginner beekeeping education can include:

  • Honey bee biology and colony organization
  • Understanding the queen, workers and drones
  • Basic hive equipment and terminology
  • How to safely open and inspect a hive
  • What healthy brood should look like
  • Finding and evaluating the queen
  • Reading frames and understanding what the bees are doing
  • Feeding and seasonal colony management
  • Swarm prevention and management
  • Varroa mites and common hive pests
  • Preparing colonies for Texas weather
  • Honey production and harvesting
  • Common mistakes new beekeepers make
  • Choosing equipment and getting started with your first hive

Our focus isn't memorizing terminology. It's learning how to look at a colony, understand what you're seeing and make good management decisions.

Hands-On Learning

Whenever the class format and weather allow, we believe one of the best ways to learn beekeeping is by getting into a hive.

Seeing brood, pollen, nectar, honey, queen cells and actual colony behavior makes concepts much easier to understand than simply seeing them on a screen.

Class formats may vary depending on the course, season and weather conditions.

Do I Need Experience?

No.

Our beginner classes are designed for people with little or no previous beekeeping experience.

If you've been researching beekeeping online and feel overwhelmed by conflicting information, that's normal. There are often several ways to accomplish the same goal in beekeeping.

We'll help you understand the fundamentals and explain how we manage colonies here in Central Texas.

Do I Need to Own Bees?

No.

In fact, taking a class before purchasing bees is often the best way to start.

You'll have a much better understanding of the equipment you actually need, what you're getting into and what to expect during your first season.

What Should I Bring?

Requirements will vary depending on the class.

For classes involving live hive inspections, we'll provide specific instructions before class regarding protective clothing and any equipment you should bring.

If you already own protective equipment, such as a bee suit, jacket or veil, you're welcome to bring it when appropriate.

Beekeeping in Texas Is Different

Beekeeping advice isn't one-size-fits-all.

Our long growing season, extreme summer heat, periods of drought, nectar dearths, unpredictable winters and local forage all influence how colonies need to be managed.

Our classes focus heavily on practical beekeeping for Central Texas conditions.

Learn From Beekeepers Who Actually Keep Bees

Lockhart Honey Company manages hundreds of working colonies throughout Central Texas.

Our experience comes from managing bees throughout the year—making splits, installing queens, controlling mites, feeding colonies, catching swarms, removing established colonies, producing honey and dealing with the same challenges our students will eventually encounter.

We don't expect new beekeepers to know everything after one class.

Our goal is to help you build the foundation necessary to become a more confident and capable beekeeper.
